BASIC FUNCTION:

Coach in various school interscholastic athletic programs.  To instruct athletes in individual and team fundamentals, strategy and physical training necessary for them to realize a degree of individual and team success.

 

 

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

  • Promote sports in the schools and community.
  • Plan the assigned athletic program.
  • Organize and supervise practices.
  • Teach individual fundamental skills, team play, team strategy, rules, and regulations of the game.
  • Teach good sportsmanship and self-control.
  • Check eligibility of participants, including insurance coverage and parent consent.
  • Provide students a proper role model, emotional support, patience, a friendly attitude and general guidance.
  • Conduct learning experiences, with small groups of student athletes.
  • Recommend the purchase of equipment, supplies and uniforms as appropriate for the health, safety and welfare of student athletes.
  • Maintain regular attendance. It is an essential job function that all employees report to work.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • Fundamentals of various sport.
  • Pendleton County Policy and Procedures working within the basic framework and philosophy of the school district for that sport.
  • Pendleton County Athletic Handbook – especially requirements concerning physical exams, parental consent, eligibility and concussion protocol.
  • Existing Pendleton County, State and League regulations; implements same consistently.
  • Health and safety regulations.
  • Proper line of command and refers student/parent requests or grievances through proper channels.
  • Meetings that require attendance.
  • Maintaining discipline and work to increase morale and cooperation within the school sports program.
  • Direct student managers and statisticians on respective teams.
  • Budgetary items and Title IV.
  • Assist Athletic Director in carrying out of responsibilities.
  • Monitor equipment and locker rooms for use by authorized persons only.
  • Oral and written communication skills.
  • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.

 

ABILITY TO:

  • Provided training in use of proper techniques, proper use of equipment, rules and other unique regulations of the sport to athletes
  • Assist in preparation to hold scheduled sporting events/practices and adheres to scheduled facility times.
  • Provides proper safeguards for maintenance and protection of assigned equipment sites.
  • Determine discipline, delineate procedures concerning due process. Contact parents when a student becomes ineligible.
  • Account for all equipment. Collection of all equipment and/or replacement costs.
  • Examine locker rooms before and after practices/games checking on general cleanliness of the facility.
  • Secure all doors, lights, windows and locks before leaving building if custodians are not on duty.
  • Instill in each player a respect for equipment and school property, its care and proper use.
  • Make press releases and school announcements in conjunction with District Athletic Director/Principal.
  • Instruct team members/assistant coaches/parents of changes in the rules and teach fundamentals of the sport.
  • Maintains a record of team statistics and requirements for lettering.
  • Arrive early enough before practice, contests, meetings to adequately prepare and remain until all players have departed.
  • Assist with planning and implementation of both in-season and out-of-season conditioning and weight programs.
  • Compile data and verify data and prepare reports.
  • Learn district organization, operations, policies, and objectives.
  • Work independently with little direction.
  • Plan and organize work.
  • Administer first aid according to established procedures.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
  • Maintain current knowledge in the sport.
  • Observe health and safety regulations.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Learn and apply safety procedures and regulations
  • Work confidentially with discretion.
  • Understand and follow oral and written directions.
  • Work cooperatively with others.

 

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Work is performed with standing, sitting and/or walking
  • Requires the ability to communicate effectively using speech, vision and hearing
  • Requires the use of hands for simple grasping and fine manipulations
  • Requires bending, squatting, crawling, climbing, reaching
  • Requires the ability to lift, carry, push, or pull heavy weights up to approximately 50 pounds

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • College degree is desired. Previous coaching or playing experience in assigned position.  Any combination equivalent to:  a high school diploma or G.E.D. Certificate, a minimum of 64 semester hours from an accredited college or university and one year of experience coaching in a school athletic program
  • Must be at least 21 years of age per KHSAA guidelines.

 

 

CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Successful completion of ABLE test, a criminal records check, AIDS awareness training, current certification in first aid and CPR.
